‘Faking It’ Proves You Shouldn’t Pressure Anyone Into A Threesome

Is that ice? I’m going to go over there and break it.

Sure I stole that from one of the stars of “Faking It,” but what else can you say about a post that’s going to discuss threesomes?

At the end of last week’s episode, Karma was ecstatic to find out that Liam was attracted to her. When she sensed his Amy-related hesitation, however, the most scandalous sentence of the season came out of her mouth: “We could have a threesome!”

Slow down, lady! Let’s press pause for a second and figure out why pressuring someone into a ménage-a-trois is a really, really bad idea.

First things first: you should never pressure anyone into a sexual act. Liam was clearly looking for a way to get with Karma without betraying his moral compass. What Karma should have done was break up with Amy, if she’s not into her BFF as a GF, and then she’d be free to get it on with the Hester High’s golden boy. Now, however, the situation has changed. Liam might think this is the only way he could be with Karma, so he probably feels like he has no other option.

Second, you absolutely have to get consent from all parties involved. Karma didn’t even think about asking Amy how she felt; she just bypassed Amy’s feelings altogether. That said, don’t think of consenting as something that will make you more appealing to your potential sexual partner.  Consent can be sexy — and it’s always required. Your goal should be to make sure everyone in the bedroom is feeling the same level of enthusiasm. Amy and Liam had the right to leave at any time when the situation became more about pressure than pleasure.

Finally, consider how you feel before proposing the threesome. Is this what you really want? Or do you just want to hook up with one of your potential sexual partners? Karma clearly doesn’t want to share Liam with Amy, but she didn’t realize that until after she suggested it. Like Amy and Liam, Karma had every right to leave when she realized she was uncomfortable; it doesn’t matter that she’s the one who suggested it in the first place.

This episode might have been all about the threesome, but just remember that these guidelines can be applied to any sexual situation. You can bring a lot of fun things into play when it comes to your sex life, but peer pressure shouldn’t be one of them.
